HISTORY
The flood was the result of torrential rain which swamped 750 acres, 3,600 buildings, including 35 churches and 60 factories.   15,000 people were made temporarily homeless and the total damage was estimated at 100,000 pounds stirling.

Boats were used to rescue people trapped in their homes and where the water was sufficiently shallow, horses and carts equipped with ladders patrolled the streets helping people out of upper-floor windows
